Tokusen Kobunboku belongs to Baieido's well-known Kobunboku family, a collection built around one of the incense house's signature formulas. The original Kobunboku combines sandalwood with traditional aromatic ingredients including borneol, clove, cinnamon and other herbs. Tokusen takes this familiar foundation and adds Kalimantan aloeswood, giving the blend greater depth and a darker woody character.
The name Kobunboku is associated with the plum tree, while 'Tokusen' roughly means specially selected or excellent. Rather than completely reinventing the original, Tokusen feels like a deeper and more complex interpretation of it.
For anyone beginning to explore traditional Japanese incense, it's also a useful stepping stone. The aloeswood is clearly present, but it remains part of a broader blend rather than dominating it.
First Impressions
The opening is dry and woody and distinctly Japanese in character. Sandalwood provides much of the foundation, joined almost immediately by a mixture of herbs and warm spices.
Cinnamon and clove can be picked out at times, alongside a cooling quality from the borneol. There is also a gentle sweetness running underneath, but this is far removed from the sweeter perfume-led style of many Indian incense sticks.
The aloeswood brings a deeper, slightly resinous woodiness to the blend, contrasting with the drier sandalwood and spices.
What makes Tokusen interesting is that none of these elements completely takes over. The fragrance moves between warm and cool, sweet and dry, woody and herbal. Different aspects seem to come forward depending on where you are in the burn.

Perhaps its greatest strength is that it doesn't reveal everything immediately. Tokusen Kobunboku is an incense that rewards returning to, with different parts of the blend becoming clearer the more familiar you become with it.
